Author's note: I wrote this story in 1991 in a Portland State University writing class held in downtown Salem, Oregon. The first draft was approximately 150 pages, but not finished. In 2001 I prepared a 240 page version, but the story line was lost. Finally in 2002, I reduced it to the 41 page short story posted here (in seven chapters), which I consider the finished version.
